Boxing Champ Donaire Recovering From Dengue Fever
OS ANGELES — Champion boxer Nonito Donaire's manager told The Associated Press that the fighter is recovering from a frightening bout of dengue fever that put him in the hospital with a 104-degree (40-degree C) temperature.
Donaire, a Filipino-born fighter raised in California's Bay Area, fell ill on Thursday in the Philippines, where he has been living since defeating Rafael Concepcion for the WBA's interim 115-pound (52-kilogram) title last month.
Manager Cameron Dunkin says that after a regimen of intravenous fluids helped to reduce his extreme fever, Donaire appears healthy enough to be released later Friday.
Donaire (22-1, 14 KOs) was the IBF flyweight champion before moving up to 115 pounds (52 kilograms).
Donaire's wife, Rachel, said Donaire likely contracted the fever from a mosquito bite.
